Sensing Boundaries on Foot

چکیده

This article examines the material and socio-cultural mechanisms by which everyday urban rural walking is controlled, regulated, limited, or affected, as seen through lens of nineteenth century visual arts with support literary historical accounts. Inspired interdisciplinary research on walking, I discuss three cases different cultural backgrounds examine therein instances in experience cannot fully take place, its movements are shaped controlled real imaginary forces, either external internal, even other modes transportation: 1) C. G. Carus’ socially constrained travelling Italy 1828, leading up to his painting Erinnerung an Neapel, 2) history Pont Neuf use regulation Paris footways lithographs ‘impressionist’ paintings Third Republic, 3) motif ‘riukuaita’ (round-pole fence) lithographs, landscape photographs during Golden Age Finnish Art. Thus, art objects considered both artworks documents that illuminate actuality events related migration, bordering processes, control mobility.
